Cold Feet Socks – An Easy and Sweet Groom Gift Idea

groomgift1

Here’s the scenario. You’re planning your wedding. You’ve been dreaming about this day since you were little. You have the perfect man, the perfect girls by your side, and you’ve found the perfect venue. You know exactly what you want everything to look like, and what the ambiance should be.

There’s just one little thing you never quite think about when your dream wedding is running in your mind – what to get your future husband for a gift on your wedding day!

I know I know, bride and groom’s gifts are not NECESSARY. Heck, the entire DAY is devoted to you two, and you’re getting great gifts from everyone else. But the tradition of giving your husband to be a little something before the wedding I think is both thoughtful and romantic.

However, if you’re anything like my husband and me, gifts aren’t really your thing. We’d spent the last 4 years celebrating every birthday and anniversary by doing something together, and not really giving each other “gifts”, per se. Our honeymoon was planned as our grand finale for our wedding, our sort of “gift” to each other.

But I still wanted for him to receive something from me on our wedding day. I loved the idea, and I wanted him to know I was thinking about him, but not go over the top. He didn’t like grand gestures, and I wanted to keep things simple, yet sweet.

What could I get that wasn’t expensive, yet totally fit our quirky personalities and would be something he would remember as the years went by? A watch? Too expensive. Cuff links? He’d never wear them. So I went on my trusty go-to wedding site, Etsy, to search for ideas.

And then, I found it! A simple cardstock holder for a pair of socks that read, “For my handsome groom. Just to make sure you don’t get cold feet. Love, Your Bride”.

Travis loves socks – I mean, what guy doesn’t? I find it funny that men are so obsessed with their sock feel and design, but hey, who am I to judge? And this was a funny, yet sweet gesture that I knew he would love. Plus, even if he didn’t, I wasn’t spending a ton of money anyway. It was a win win for my wedding day.

But, I didn’t want to buy the holder off of Etsy. I mean, it wasn’t expensive, but if I wasn’t going to spend a ton of money I felt that I needed to make it my own . So I decided to DIY.

In the end, Travis ended up LOVING it (I knew he would). It gave him a good laugh, AND he was able to keep the cardstock holder as a keepsake from our wedding day. He still has it in his bedside drawer, as a reminder of the day we were married (and he still wears the socks ALL the time, too). It made all the difference that the holder was handmade by me, because it reminds him not only of our special day, but of me!

And it’s actually EXTREMELY easy to make. Below, I give you the step by step instructions how to make this groom gift yourself, and include a free printable template to get you started.

Steps to Create Your Own “Cold Feet” Groom Gift

The Necessary Supplies:

Step 1:

  • Download the template here. You can upload it to either your Silhouette Cameo studio, or import it into a word doc.
  • Make sure it fits on an 8.5×11″ area.

Step 2:

  • If using your Silhouette Cameo, put a sketch pen into your machine (any color), and press “send to Silhouette”.
    • This will print in whatever color pen you put into your machine (not the black that’s on the image download).
    • I used the Silhouette Pen Holder and one of my gel pens to do this. I find they work much better and last longer than the Silhouette sketch pens. With the pen holder, you can use ANY pen you love in your Silhouette machine.
  • If using a regular printer and paper, make sure your margins in Word or whatever program you’re using are as small as possible. Then, send it to print.
    • It will print in black.

Step 3:

  • If you’re using a Silhouette, fill in the outlines of the words and zig zags yourself, with a matching color pen.
  • If you’re using a printer, and want the design to be a different color (ie: white or silver), print it as is, and then trace over it by hand with an opaque white or silver fine point gel pen (I cannot recommend the pens I’ve linked above highly enough).

Step 4:

  • Once filled in, cut around the edges of the design (in the zig zag shape) to cut off the excess paper.
    • You can also cut this on your Silhouette cutting machine, but I find it easy just to do it by hand (ie: I haven’t taken the time to create a zig zag cut line in my design studio yet).

Step 5:

  • Now, wrap the cardstock into a circular shape around your socks, with the “love you” saying laying on the top of plain side.
  • Take your glue gun and put a line of glue on the plain side, and attach the “love you” side on top.

Ta da! Easy peasy, right? And not only is it easy, but it’s handmade by YOU. Although it’s not some grand gesture, I guarantee your groom will appreciate the effort, as well as the cheekiness of it all 🙂 And if you’re like me, and are having trouble coming up with a fun idea for a groom gift, you absolutely cannot go wrong with this.

And as always, if you don’t have time to DIY, I sell these “cold feet” sock covers in my shop (sans socks). Not surprisingly, they’re one of my BEST sellers! I get a few orders a DAY for them, and I just put them up for sale a couple weeks ago. Crazy, huh? You’d be missing the boat if you didn’t get one, or make one yourself.

So if you’re ready to get crafting, here’s a recap of everything you’ll need to DIY your own groom gift!
