The BEST Stuffed French Toast Recipe : A Party Favorite

stuffed french toast

I usually don’t blog about food recipes because, well, I’m not a chef. I’m not a food blogger for a reason, because I don’t cook really ever. So I’ll leave that to the pros. However, when I find a dish that helps in my party planning, is great for a holiday party, and is specifically requested to be put up as a tutorial on the blog – I can’t help but include it. Hey, anything that helps make a party a little sweeter (and is easy enough for this non-chef to prepare) is definitely right up my alley.

Time Management in the Kitchen – Not so Easy

Tell me if this scenario sounds familiar to you… You’re throwing a party (brunch, bridal shower, sip and see, 4th of July, WHATEVER the occasion may be) and the party starts early in the day. Let’s say around 11am. You have your checklist of to-dos that need to be done before the guests arrive: decorations need to be up, place settings need to be out, food needs to be prepped and cooked – and most importantly, YOU have to get ready for the party yourself!

Yep, throwing a daytime party always seems to be a last minute scramble, and it’s YOU who always seems to get the shaft. Heck, it doesn’t even have to be a party situation. Overnight guests, ornery kids, WHATEVER the morning scramble situation may be. There’s never enough time in the day, and never enough free hands, to cook in the kitchen AND take care of yourself, too.

I know whenever I’ve thrown a get together- I’m always jealous that my guests show up looking fresh and fabulous. I want to start enjoying myself immediately when they arrive, but I’m still finishing what needs to be done. And I’m ready either SUPER early, with my makeup much less fresh than it was when I put it on 3 hours before the party started (because that was the only time I had allotted to get ready), or leaving myself only a couple minutes to throw on something clean if there’s time left over after everything is done.

And I’m a planner! I plan way in advance, do as much as I can ahead of time, try to get myself ready early, whatever it takes. But somehow, I seem to end up in the same situation, every time. Scrambling at the last minute to finish up the details. I can’t even imagine what someone feels like who is not a planner like I am! If that’s you, I feel for you!

I made them for the baby shower I threw for my friend Kendra the other week, and they were a HUGE hit (and a huge time saver for me). I got a bunch of comments on how they would be perfect for a patriotic party (4th of July, Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc) because they’re topped with strawberries, blueberries, and powdered sugar. • 1/2 c heavy cream
    • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
    • 1 tsp vanilla
    • 1 cup sugar
  • French Toast Top Crust
    • 1 tbsp sugar
    • ½ tsp cinnamon
    • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • Blueberry Cream Cheese Filling
    • 12 oz cream cheese

  • Take your bread and cut off all of the crusts.

  • Take the cream cheese mix you first set aside, and place 2 tbsp on each piece of bread (inclusive of blueberries added).
    • I added 1 tbsp of cream cheese mix to each piece of bread, then topped the cream cheese with 1 tbsp of blueberries (so as not to crush the blueberries).
  • Roll up each slice of bread over the filling (like a burrito), and place the roll up seam down in a greased 9×13″ baking dish.

Step 4:

  • Once finished with all your roll ups, mix the ingredients for the french toast top crust together, and brush on the top of the roll ups.
    • This will give them a semi-caramelized top crust. Feel free to leave this step out if it’s too sweet for your liking. They’ll come out just fine without it.

Step 5:

  • Now, mix all of the ingredients for the french toast batter together.
  • Pour the mixture over roll ups, cover, and put in your refrigerator to let sit overnight.
    • Note: The roll ups may look like they’re drowning in mixture. THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT! When you come back in the morning, the bread will have soaked up most of the mixture, like magic 🙂

Step 6:

  • In the morning, preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  • Take your stuffed french toast out of the refrigerator and bake, uncovered, for 50 minutes.

Step 7:

  • Garnish with powdered sugar, cinnamon, and berries!
  • Put whipped cream on the side for an optional garnish. It will melt and be really gross if you try to put it on top of the entire dish.
