Heart Shaped Chocolate Lollipops : A Fun Twist on the Traditional Cake Pop

OH MY GOSH, you guys. Cuteness overload. I am obsessed with these heart shaped chocolate lollipops. They’re a fun take on the yummy, yet extremely overused cake pop.

I have a HUGE sweet tooth, and became obsessed with cake pops about 7 years ago. However, when Starbucks started selling them (and they became a party staple) they lost a little of their appeal to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I still think they’re as delicious as they are adorable. Heck, I even have my own cake pop MACHINE, and a tutorial on some delicious cake pop how-tos coming up. However, when trying to come up with original party ideas, cake pop no longer screamed unique.

This is where my heart pops came in. They were the perfect addition for the dessert table at the Valentine themed baby shower I was throwing. But if you’re getting married, throwing a bridal shower, or ANY party that has to do with love, these are a GREAT go to! And depending on the flavor you choose, they can make your home smell divine!

They’re relatively inexpensive as well (yay!). At around $.50 per pop, they won’t break the bank, and they take MUCH less time and prep than traditional cake pops.

If you’ve never made cake pops before, I must warn you that they are SUPER time consuming. The traditional way to make cake pops to to first, bake a cake. Then, let it cool. Then mix it with your other ingredients to form your balls, stick them with sticks, freeze them to the sticks stay on, roll them in melted chocolate, and then freeze again so the chocolate hardens. Before you know it, you’ve spent your entire evening (4+ hours) making these silly things.

I try not to sound too grumpy, but it took me by surprise the first time I made them. And I was VERY unhappy. But now, I’m happy to report these heart shaped alternatives take MUCH less time (about 45 total- at the HIGH end). And although they are not cakey, I made a separate cake to go with them on the dessert table (tutorial to follow next week). I was able to get 2 adorable, themed desserts out of the time and money I would have spent on just 1 set of cake pops.

So if you’re looking to save time, money, and add something special to your next event, these chocolate lollipops are for you!

Steps to Make Heart Lollipops

The Necessary Tools:

Step 1:

  • Preheat your oven to 300 degrees.

Step 2:

  • Lay your wax paper down on your baking sheets.
  • Place 2 candy canes facing each other in the shape of a “heart” onto the wax paper, with a lollipop stick in the middle.

Step 3:

  • Put your baking sheets into your oven for 3 minutes.

Step 4:

  • When you take your sheets out, the candy canes should be malleable enough to pinch the tops and bottoms of the hearts together, and against the top and middle of the lollipop stick.
    • If the canes are not malleable enough, place them back in the oven for a minute at a time until they are.

Step 5:

  • Take some of your candy chocolates and place them in a ziplock bag.
  • Put the bag with the chocolates into the microwave for about 1 minute.

Step 6:

  • Knead the bag with the chocolates inside until they become a smooth, melted consistency.
  • Cut a hole in the top of the bag and pipe the chocolate into the center of each heart

Step 7:

  • OPTIONAL STEP: Sprinkle colored sprinkles onto the chocolate before it cools, for an added touch of color.
  • Let the pops cool out on the counter. Do not put them in the fridge or freezer.

Step 8:

  • OPTIONAL STEP: Once cooled, tie a cute bow with matching ribbon at the bade of the heart pop.

And that’s it! Cute, fun, yummy chocolate shaped heart lollipops for your next party (or just for a fun, Valentine’s treat for your kiddos).

Color and Flavor Variations for your Chocolate Heart Pops

For my heart pops, I chose peppermint. 100% peppermint candy canes and chocolate flavored filling. My kitchen smelled minty fresh for an entire day. It was amazing! However, the reasoning behind my flavor choice wasn’t just as an air freshener for my house.

Since the party was Valentine themed, I wanted something that went with my color scheme. The white and red of the peppermint candy melts paired with the traditional candy caned worked PERFECTLY. It also gave my dessert table some different flavors, so everyone could have something they liked.

If you have a different color scheme, or are going for a different look, here are some different options you could use to spruce up your own heart pops:

Chocolate Heart Lollipops (Brown)

Cherry Heart Lollipops (Red/Pink)

Blood Orange Heart Lollipops (Orange)

Birthday Cake Heart Lollipops (Yellow)

Sugar Plum Heart Lollipops (Blue/Purple)

Strawberry Christmas Heart Lollipops (Red & Green)

Really, the options and combos are endless. Finish them off with a matching bow and your dessert table goes from ordinary, to extraordinary! Have fun 🙂
