DIY Britney Spears Costume #2 – The Toxic Rhinestone Nude Suit

Yes, today is the day. I am officially 30 years old! I don’t know what this means yet, except for the fact that I can no longer claim to be anywhere in my twenties. And maybe the fact that I am one step closer to officially being “middle-aged”. But mentally, nothing has changed.

I still love pink and sparkles. I still enjoy to craft. I still love myself a great Disney movie. I still can’t get enough of musicals. I still love to dress up (both for fancy occasions AND in costume). And yes, I am still, completely obsessed with Britney Spears. And since this is still my birthday week, I am continuing on with my favorite theme: Britney!

On Tuesday, I gave you a bit of a background into my Britney fandom, and how it all began. And I mentioned briefly that, as soon as I heard Britney was going to have a residency in Las Vegas, I immediately started to plan my bachelorette party there.

What I wished I would have thought of sooner, however, was to make everyone at the bachelorette party dress as their favorite Britney Spears. I read a story somewhere online about a group of girls that did this for one of her first shows, and got to go backstage because of it. I think I would have died and gone to heaven!!! Meeting Britney Spears, a dream come true for 13 year old Kaitlin (well, let’s be honest, even 30 year old Kaitlin).

So here, I want to make sure you don’t miss out on your opportunity. If you’re going to Las Vegas to see Britney’s “Piece of Me Show,” listen up! On Tuesday, I showed you an amazing tutorial how to make your own exact replica of Britney’s VMA “Slave for You” costume.

But Britney has oh so many looks, it’s hard to pick just one. So in continuing with Britney week, I wanted to give you one of my other favorites: the Nude Sparkle Toxic Suit.

This look caused a huge stir when it first debuted on MTV (back in the days when MTV was still playing music videos). Britney swore that she was actually nude, and that every single rhinestone on her body was placed on her skin individually.

Well, unless you’re a painted lady at the Playboy Mansion, that look will never fly outside MTV. However, there are a few different things you can do to achieve the “nude rhinestone” toxic look. Perfect for paying your tribute at one of her concerts, or just playing it up for Halloween.

Below, I show you step by step how to make your own Toxic rhinestone Britney Spears costume. But first, feel free to go back in time to 2002 for a little reminder of Britney in all her “Toxic” glory.

Steps to Make the “Toxic” Rhinestone Britney Spears Costume

The Necessary Tools:

Step 1:

  • If you don’t have a mannequin or dress form at home, have someone trace an outline of you on a piece of cardboard.
  • Cut your silhouette out of cardboard.
    • This will serve as a backing for your hot tool as well as a model to stretch your nude suit while applying your rhinestones.
      • If you apply the stones while the suit is not stretched, they will look off and out of place once you stretch the suit to put it on.

Step 2:

  • Try your nude suit or body stocking on and with a fabric pen or sharpie, place tiny markers in places where you’d like the rhinestones to go (ie: on breasts, crotch, etc. Important areas to cover)
    • The rest will be sporadic placements.

Step 3:

  • Now, put your nude suit or body stocking on your cardboard cutout or dress form.
  • Plus in your Hot Fix applicator wand, and start applying rhinestones to the places you’ve marked.
    • Make sure to mix it up between the large and smaller stones. Put them the most heavily in the places where your private areas go, and more haphazardly around the rest of the nude suit.
    • Try your best to make it look like the rhinestones are the only things covering your private areas.

Step 4:

  • Try your nude suit on again to make sure the stones are everywhere you want them to be.
  • If you’ve missed any spots, use your fabric pen to again mark where you want the stones to go.

Step 5:

  • One last time, place your nude suit onto your cardboard cutout and fill in the spaces with rhinestones that you missed the first time.
  • Make sure to place rhinestones not only over the private areas, but on the sides of the abdomen, down the legs, and down the arms.

Voi La! Your nude suit is officially complete.

Finishing you Britney Spears “Toxic” Look

To finish off the look, make sure to put on your rhinestone statement necklace (Britney wore one in the video and it won’t be an exact replica if you leave this part out).

Make sure to apply heavy makeup (make sure in nude colors, as Britney did not have any dark makeup for this look) and I would also suggest false eyelashes.

Lastly, make sure you straighten your hair with a flat iron. Britney’s hair is STICK straight in this look. If you don’t have long hair (or your hair doesn’t straighten well), you can always get a wig to complete your Toxic look.

And that’s it! Another GREAT costume to DIY when going to see Britney in Las Vegas. If you get backstage with one of these looks, I absolutely NEED to hear about it. I will salute you.

If you don’t want to DIY (or are in a rush) as always, I have these for sale in my shop. But if you’re feeling inspired, here’s a recap of everything you’ll need to DIY:
